Jackaroo / Jillaroo

Jackaroo/Jillaroos are employed by cattle or sheep station owners to perform various activities associated with the day to day operations of the station. Also known as Farm Worker, Livestock Farm Worker, Station Worker, Stockman and Farm Hand. Jackaroo/Jillaroos often reside on the property in accommodation supplied by the property owner and meals supplied by the cook on the property. 

Job Description 

  • care for livestock and treat minor injuries and illness
  • droving and mustering on horseback and/or motorbike
  • maintain station equipment and inspect, repair or replace fences, gates and yards
  • assist with light household duties
  • use and maintain vehicles and heavy machinery
  • undertake farming work such as cultivation and hay making
  • water runs to check tanks, dams and troughs, windmills and pumpjacks are working. 
  • undertake clerical and administrative tasks.
  • traineeships available with the opportunity for promotions

  • enjoys working outside and being active
  • able to do manual work
  • enjoys working with animals
  • enjoys riding horse and/or motorbikes
  • mechanically minded
  • well organised and punctual 
  • good communication skills
  • observant 
  • able to prioritize 

Educational Requirements

You can work as a jackaroo or jillaroo without formal qualifications and will gain much experiences and training on the job.

You can begin your career through Jackaroo/Jillaroos traineeships, which are available  through the property and offers many formal and informal training opportunities. 

You can also kick start your career as a Jackaroo/Jillaroo by educational courses supplied by Tafe, though all Tafe courses require a minimum Year 10 requirement to undertake any courses available.
